Sepia toned beauty of India through the eyes of Waswo X. Waswo

Photography is for me an exploration of a fragmented reality. It is a media that is inherently deceptive under its thin veneer of truth telling. In the end, all photographs are autobiographical and subjective. The best of them do not document our day-to-day life, but hold a poetry that transcends it”.

Waswo X. Waswo  is very well known photographer, artist, writer, who is known for his passion for sepia toned photography. His words above,  very well define the beauty of photographs that preserve sweet memories, a story ,and capturing unsaid emotions, that you can cherish for lifetime.

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, his love for India began almost 19 years ago and eventually made  India (Udaipur) his home to continue and deepen his passion. He has revived the artisan yesteryear technique of hand colouring the black and white photographs in collaboration with the team of local artisans who paint the back drop, locals pose as models, the colourist who paints his photographs. He has also developed an enthusiastic interest in miniature painting and collaborated with Rakesh Vijay a miniaturist from Udaipur. His miniatures are  autobiographical and inspired by his personal odyssey.

These hand coloured photographs really took me way back, back down memory lane and  have brought back so many bittersweet and touching memories of my family.  My cupboards are filled with such sepia toned photographs of my parents wedding , etc. There are so many !!!!!

Well, more such galleries from waswo x waswo can be seen on his website.
